Twilight: wrapped around him like a coffin
Fandom: Twilight
Title: wrapped around him like a coffin
Characters/Pairing: Jasper/Bella
Warnings: Character death
Rating: PG-13 (for some slight suggestions)
Summary: "The day is bright and she is sparkling, but she doesn't notice, because, to her, the sun is nowhere to be seen. The night skies, equally, are devoid of burning stars and the glowing moon. She is left with nothing but the ground beneath her feet."

A/N: This is my first Twilight fic. It's a little short, sorta drabble-ly, but constructive criticism is very much appreciated :)

"wrapped around him like a coffin"

The sight of his body, lying charred in the grass, is a sight she sees every time she closes her eyes. So she never closes them for long. Her eyes flick around her surroundings, blinking quickly like a camera shutter--pictures taken by someone who doesn't know how to use a camera.

She sits in the meadow and tries to hear him. The day is bright and she is sparkling, but she doesn't notice, because, to her, the sun is nowhere to be seen. The night skies, equally, are devoid of burning stars and the glowing moon. She is left with nothing but the ground beneath her feet.

Suddenly, Jasper is sitting next to her and touching her shoulder and she remembers that he doesn't need to use his ability to know how she is feeling as she sits there, with wildflowers pressing against her ankles. She wonders if he sees the same thing--the softly smoking remains of his love--when he closes his eyes.

"I'm leaving tonight," she says.

"Oh?" His eyebrow is quirked and she doesn't understand why he can act so carefree sometimes. "Where to?"

"Volterra."

"No."

"Excuse me?"

"No, you're not going to Volterra."

"What are you? Alice?" She grimaces after the words leave her mouth. The aftertaste is too bitter.

"No, but I made a promise. To Edward and to Alice. No contingency plans for you." There's a pause and he mumbles under his breath: "Or for me."

"What am I going do?" she asks desperately, the words dripping off of her tongue like teardrops.

His hand is suddenly on her back and her head is against his chest. Her fingers clutch his shirt, pulling the treads as far as they'll go--but they don't snap. She releases them gently, with a shuddering breath, and nods her head, her cheek brushing the cotton that feels like silk.

She's in his arms, effortlessly, and he's carrying her back home. She doesn't know why he brings her to their room--the one that smells like him, that holds his belongings, that holds his memory the tightest--and places her on the bed.

He stays with her and she's wrapped around him like a coffin.

"Do you blame me?" she mumbles softly against his ear. If she had a heartbeat, it would be frantic.

"It wasn't your fault."

"They were protecting me. It was my fault."

She feels him shake his head. "Bella--Alice and Edward were protecting someone they love. I can't blame you for anything."

He almost tells her that they had been protecting someone he loves too, but he's not sure what she would think of such a confession. Would she think it was because they were family? Brother and sister? If so, his love bordered on incest.

He wondered if he would ever be brave enough to tell her that she had always smelled the same to him, as she had to Edward--but Edward had been stronger. He wondered if could explain how he loved Alice more than life--existence--itself, but that he yearned for her--for her smell, for her taste. For her touch.

One of these days, he's going to tell her how Edward had won the fight for her heart--the dirty, bloody, barbaric fight in the middle of an open field that only Edward and himself knew about (they hadn't planned it and Alice hadn't been watching for anything).

(Even now she is still Edward's, but, one of these days, he's going to ask her if she could ever be his.)

"Did Alice know?"

"Yes."

"And you let her go?"

He sighs and his fingers tug lightly on her hair, tickling her back. "The future is never set in stone."

Hours later, it's Rosalie who finds them tangled together. She smiles sadly and leaves them alone. There's no fighting the inevitable.

Ohh loved this. I see their relationship as a huge accident, not planned, falling in love during a disaster... so perfect. Very well written... just great!!

Thank you :) I think that's why I find this pairing so fascinating: it's not supposed to be, but it could be.

Wonderful story, I'm sorry it's so short. I actually want more. :) But that's me, the saga could go on infinitely as far as I'm concerned. I love the whole "what if" aspect of Jasper and Bella. *sigh* :)

Lovely.

Aw, thanks :)

As far I know, the title is my original creation, but I could have subconsciously stolen it from something *shrug*
